Trinity Sunday Sermon, The Rev. Elizabeth Blunt, “God’s Divine Love is Unity in Diversity”

June 4, 2023

On Trinity Sunday, the Collect and Preface—prayers specific to the day—invite us to contemplate the threefold nature of God: manifested as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and yet one unified Being. For Trinity Church Wall Street, the day also marks a patronal feast for our parish!

In her sermon, the Rev. Elizabeth E. Blunt walks us through the history of the three hypostases in the early Church before drawing parallels between the Creation story and the parameters of the Trinity: God the Creator, God the Word, and God the Spirit. In our creation, we Christians believe that we are “created in the image of a great and mystical unity in diversity.” Our community bears God’s likeness in our multitudes of experience, affinity, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, ability, and opinion. Watch the sermon. The readings are Genesis 1:1—2:4a, Psalm 8, 2 Corinthians 13:11–13, and Matthew 28:16–20.
