Stanley Hauerwas (A Cross-Shattered Church: Reclaiming the Theological Heart of Preaching) was named “Best Theologian” by Time magazine in 2001. He takes an approach that is cross-disciplinary and cannot be labeled liberal or conservative. He has been Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at Duke University since 1983, after a notable career at Notre Dame. Hauerwas gave the prestigious Gifford Lectures in 2001, the first American invited to do so in 40 years. His award-winning memoir, Hannah’s Child, was published in 2010.
