Monday Service Sermon, The Rev. Matthew A. Welsch: Labor Day: "An Invitation to Celebrate, Reflect, Advocate"

September 6, 2021

Many Americans view Labor Day as “a bit of a mystery,” preaches the Rev. Matthew A. Welsch. “It’s the last hurrah of summer, a commercial holiday and a beach holiday.” But the first Labor Day – with its gathering of 20,000 workers at City Hall – was very different.

This Labor Day Father Matt reminds us that the call for economic justice lies at the heart of Christian mission. Indeed, it’s mentioned “more than any other social concern in all of scripture.” The readings are Ecclesiasticus 38:27–32; 1 Corinthians 3:10–14; and Matthew 6:19–24.
