Sunday Sermon, The Rev. Michael A. Bird: "Do Not Be Afraid, Little Flock"

August 7, 2022

"Discipleship is daring to risk out of love.” It’s not hard to make a list of the things we are afraid of; from what we look like, to what people think of us, to how much we have or don’t have. But true discipleship requires vulnerability, preaches Father Bird.

When Jesus said ‘do not be afraid’ to his disciples, he meant it not as a set up but as a gift. And even if we’re not quite ready to answer the call, that’s ok too, “because when Jesus comes, as he came before and will come again, he is coming not to punish but to bless. And if we know that that is what’s waiting for us, that that's the end of the story, then why be afraid?” The readings are Genesis 15:1–6; Psalm 33; Hebrews 11:1–3, 8–16 and Luke 12:32–40.
