Sunday Sermon, The Rev. Elizabeth Blunt: "The Beatitudes: Postures of the Heart"
“No one can hunger and thirst for righteousness if they believe they are already full.”
The Beatitudes are so familiar to us that many may even have them memorized. And while it might be tempting to sort the list into categories, Mother Beth Blunt offers that what is more important is what unifies them: their teachings about hope, longing, humility, and reconciliation.
“Today’s lesson is a large part of what Jesus ultimately commissions his disciples to teach and obey to the end of the age,” she preaches. The Sermon on the Mount reminds us that there is a space in every one of us that longs for righteousness, consolation, and justice, and if we nurture this longing, change will come. The readings are Micah 6:1–8; Psalm 15; 1 Corinthians 1:18–31; and Matthew 5:1–12.
