Epiphany Sermon, The Rev. Elizabeth Blunt "The Epiphany: Majesty in Lowliness"

January 6, 2023

The twelve days of Christmastide have officially ended, giving way to Epiphany, one of the major feasts of the Church. In her homily at the Epiphany Holy Eucharist at Trinity Church Wall Street, the Rev. Elizabeth Blunt compares Epiphany to a promise of light, but a gentle and subtle light, like that of a star. Mother Beth points out that Jesus’s identity surprised many, not a fierce warrior or conquering hero, but the vulnerable child of a poor, young woman, reminding us that “paths toward holy things often lead away from worldly power and privilege.” The readings are Isaiah 60:1–6 and Matthew 2:1–12.
