"A joyful heart is good medicine ..." (Proverbs 17:22)

In 2015, Archbishop Desmond Tutu traveled to Dharamsala, India, to celebrate the 80th birthday of his dear spiritual friend and brother, the Dalai Lama. These two remarkable exemplars of joy spent a week together exploring the qualities of heart and mind that lead to joy, a meeting described in The Book of Joy and now the documentary film "Mission: Joy."

This retreat will focus on the four qualities of the heart they spoke about - forgiveness, gratitude, compassion, and generosity - and introduce practices to help us cultivate or deepen these qualities in ourselves and our daily lives. Each session will include poetry and/or inspirational readings, opportunities for journaling and reflection, and invitations for prayer and practice between sessions.

The Rev. Diane Berke is the Founder and Spiritual Director of One Spirit Learning Alliance, an interfaith and interspiritual educational organization entering its twenty-first year of training ministers and spiritual companions to serve the needs of our increasingly diverse and multicultural world. Ordained in 1988, she has led retreats and workshops on spiritual development throughout the United States and internationally.
